History of Baccarat

Like many games of chance the hostory of Baccarat is shrouded in a cloud of mystery. Most experts agree that the first game of Baccarat was played during the middle ages, however the name of the creator and what type of card was used is lost to history, although most believe the first games of Baccarat used a Tarot deck.

One theory has Lino Bussoli an Italian money-lender based in the remote mountainous region of Abruzzo inventing the game. Bussoli was know and feared throughout the region for his shading dealing and appearance. Bussoli had both ears removed for punishment for hos crooked behavior and disloyalty. Not only were his ears missing by his nose was severly hooked adding to his unpleasent appearence. Bussoli was always devising new ways to make money and is believed to have created the fore-runners to many of todays gambling games.

Eventually Baccarat made its way to France where it became a big hit with the French aristocracy. The game continued to evolve and today there are 4 contemporary variations:
  1. American
  2. Chemin de Fer
  3. European
  4. Baccarat en Banque
It is believed that Baccarat first arrived in American casinos in 1959 or 1960. It is generally accepted that The Sands casino is where Baccarat was first played when Tommy Renzoni (casino owner) brought the game over from Cuba shortly before Castro seized control of Cuba. The game that Renzoni brought over was adapted from the French version called Chemin de Fer. It is said that the game arrived in Cuba via Argentina. From land based casino's in Las Vegas and Atlantic City Baccarat has further evolved into an online version.

As popular as Baccarat is in North America, it is even more so in Asia. Asian big rollers flock to Vegas each year to try their hand in the glamour, glitz and plush Baccarat rooms of the casinos.
